Year end with Biriyani

We ended year-2013 with Biriyani. We had Biriyani at Gopalan cinemas, Bangalore. A diet well defined by Venkat Prabhu.

Biriyani didn't disappoint our taste-buds. The masala mix was done good enough to make Biriyani interesting.

Karthi was perfect for the role. And Karthi-Premji combination has worked well. All the actors had done their part well.

Aquarium - By A First Timer

Last week we installed aquarium in our house. We are first timers for aquariums in house. Mostly motivated by my daughter's interest towards fishes. 

We went to an aquarium shop (Kagadassapura, Bangalore) nearby to our locality. Introducing myself as a first timer for aquarium, I asked him to suggest on installing an aquarium. 

He showed and explained me on the varieties of aquarium and it's accessories. He asked me to pick the products based on my requirements like how big I need and the budget.

I opted for the custom made aquarium glass tank (2ft x 1ft) along with top and steel stand over the imported aquarium which was very costly.

I bought all the accessories along with the tank like 4 Kgs of gravel, heater, motor filter, light, fish net, food, live plants, medicine, plastic plants and siphon suction pump. And I bought 5 pairs of fishes. 

The total cost came for Rs. 4100. With a discount of Rs 200, I paid Rs 3900. I have listed down the price details below.

உயிரைக் கொடுத்தேனும் நாட்டை காப்பாற்றுங்கள்

A drama on space. Visually stunning, giving the best 3D experience. Worth a watch but I made two ;-).

Toll charge - Bangalore to Kanniyakumari/Nagercoil

Recently had to go to my hometown Valliyur from Bangalore. I took the NH7 that runs through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Thirumangalam, Virudhunagar, Sattur, Kovilpatti and Tirunelveli. 

This route has tolls. The toll charge I paid till I reached Valliyur is Rs 635 for my car. One has to pay the same toll charge for going Nagercoil or Kanniyakumari from Bangalore. Because there is no other tolls after Valliyur.

The total toll charges paid till I reached Salem is Rs. 230.

The total toll charges paid till I reached Thirumangalam is Rs. 451.

The total toll charges paid till I reached Valliyur is Rs. 636

Benjarong - A Thai Treat

Last friday went for a team outing to Benjarong (Thai Cuisine), Ulsoor, Bangalore. We were of 10 members - 5 non-vegetarians and 5 vegetarians. Since I was one among the vegetarians on that day, I am writing only about the veg part of our lunch.

First we are served with the complimentary appetizer Miang Kham. Making a bite from lettuce leaves, toasted shredded coconut, ginger, onion, roasted peanuts, red bird's eye chili, lime and sauce. I was tasting this for the first time and I found it very tasty.

We had soups - Tom som and Gaeng som phak. Among the two, my pick was Tom som which had tofu and mushroom. Gaeng som phak was little spicy. Then we had the appetizers - Phak bung tod gratiem prik tai, Med tohu tod namprik pow and Satay je. Phak bung tod gratiem prik tai was my favourite.

We had Bamee pahd namprik pow (noodles), Khao hom mali prik (thai fragrant rice) and Kaeng bamaa (curry) for the main course. All the three were very tasty.

We finished with thai desserts. We tried Sankhaya fakthong, Aitim tod, Tub tim grob, Lemon grass ice cream, Sakoo cantaloupe, Rambutans in syrup and Banana pancake with coconut ice cream. I liked Aitim tod and Banana pancake with coconut ice cream.

Food was very tasty, the ambience was good and the service was also good. But the food was very expensive. As we paid around Rs. 14500 for 10 persons.

One mention about the food menu for that day. In addition to the main menu, they provided us with a special menu for dishes. They said that the special menu was for some food festival happening there. 

Aarambam - Good Beginning

Today went to Aarambam movie. As I said in the title the movie had a good beginning. The film goes at a good pace till the interval.
The second half is ok. Not bad and not so good. But totally missing the logics. Though Ajith looks good all through the movie, it is little embarrassing seeing him in a song along with Rana.
Overall it's a good package.

Hotel Nellai Saravana Bhava, Tirunelveli

Yesterday had dinner at Nellai Saravana Bhava. I went there with one of my close friends.
The hotel is located in a very prominent location in Tirunelveli town.
Ordered for parotta kurma, pani pori, appam and dosa. Parotta is served half cooked. Got replaced after complaining. Overall the food was below average. But prices are high compared to the quality of food they serve.
A big disappointment for me who went inside having HSB (Hotel Saravana Bhavan) in mind.

Hotel Burma Kadai, Virudhunagar

We were on the way to my hometown from Bangalore. It was around 2:00 PM and we had crossed Madurai. When I was searching for some highway restaurant, my wife suggested me to get into Virudhunagar for the hotel Burma. She said that this hotel is good and famous in Virudhunagar. She had got to know about this hotel when she was doing her graduate there in Virudhunagar.
When I took the service lane for getting into Virudhunagar, we saw the hotel Burma Kadai right on the service lane of the Virudhunagar Bypass. And it is located exactly opposite to the 'VVV College for Women'.
Also I got confirmed with the security over there for it is the branch of the same Burma hotel which is inside Virudhunagar. We were happy for the time saved by not entering into the town.
My wife told that this hotel is famous for briyani. But by the time (2:20 PM) we ordered for it, it was over and we opted for other choices.
The ambience was very good. The service was excellent. The food we ordered tasted good. The price was also reasonable. Will visit again if I get a chance.

Hotel Sree Apoorva, Salem

Recently happened to take breakfast at hotel Sree Apoorva, Salem. This hotel is on the Salem bypass road. The hotel ambience is very ordinary. And service could have been better. The food was ok. But not worth for the price we paid.

Sukh Sagar, Koramangala, Bangalore

Last Sunday, we had dinner at Sukh Sagar located in 100ft Road, Koramangala, Bangalore. Its a pure veg restaurant.

The food was tasty. The service was very quick and good. The price was reasonable. We (two persons) had mushroom chilly for starter and naans with paneer butter masala for the main course. We paid..

Having a good experience with this restaurant for more than a couple of times, I went for a dinner with my relatives. And this time, I had the very worst experience.

First we had Cream of Mushroom soup, Mushroom Chilly, Gobi Manchurian and Veg Spring Roll. Mushroom chilly and Gobi manchurian tasted bad. There was no freshness. And I tasted the worst Veg Spring Roll which was full of oil and half cooked.

Then when we ordered for paratha and other roti stuffs we were said that it will take more time. We were provided with the option of Dosas. And we went with plain dosa and onion dosa. 

Post-paid to pre-paid conversion - Airtel

Recently I changed my post-paid Airtel connection to pre-paid connection in Chennai (Tamil Nadu). I thought its worth to post here what one has to do for converting the post-paid connection to the pre-paid connection .

First it is a must to visit a near-by airtel showroom for doing this. We need to carry the following while we go there,

• a passport size photograph,
• an address proof (driving license) and
• an ID proof (pan card).

On providing the above, the airtel customer care executive would give  a form for buying (Rs. 50) a new sim card. This new sim card is for the prepaid connection we are to get. Then we have to pay the outstanding bills (if any) for the post-paid connection we are to close. After which the processing for post-paid to pre-paid conversion would be initiated by the airtel customer care executive.

After initiation the whole conversion process would take at least three days. First the sim card for the post-paid connection would be de-activated within three days from the day we applied for the conversion.

After that we should replace the old sim card with the new one.  And then we have to call the airtel customer care (I was asked to call 59059) from the new sim card to activate it. Unless we call the airtel customer care and provide the information (like name, father's name and address) they ask for confirmation, the connection won't be activated.

Once you call the customer care and confirm your identity, the sim card would be activated within next 15 minutes.

Team Outing @ Angsana-Oasis Spa & Resort

This week we had the team outing at Angsana-Oasis Spa & Resort, Main Doddaballapur Road, Addevishwanathapura Village, Rajanukunte, Bangalore-560064.

The Resort is a good getaway from this Bangalore city life. The resort is beautifully made. Though I didn't get to see the resort fully due to the team activities we had, I happened to see the well maintained green lawns surrounded by trees and the cool swimming pool.

The architecture of the resort is very pleasant making it to be a good place to chill out.

The downside I can say about the resort is the food they offered. From the welcome drinks to lunch then to the tea, they failed to impress.

We had some external organizers for the team activities over there. They made us into three teams and organized around six games.

After that, some of us played Volleyball, some of us played cricket and some played the games of their own interest. And around 17:30 Hrs IST, we left the resort.

Nexus4 Battery Life

Since the day I bought the Nexus4, I wanted to check how long the battery charge would stand? Of course, that depends heavily on the usage of the smartphone.

Mine used to come around 2 days for an average use of attending calls, checking mail, social networking and listening online radio. But one of my colleagues used to complain that his Nexus4 battery stands hardly for a day even for the minimal usage of attending few calls.

Recently I had very minimal usage (checking mail, social networking and enabled GPS for 20minutes navigation) of my smartphone. And I saw the battery charge stood for 3 days. I hope, as of now,  this is a decent performance of the battery in Nexus4 (Android-4.3).

Baby Tricycle

Today bought a baby tricycle from Bhagavathi Toys, New Thippasandra, Bangalore. Checked two more shops over there and found the price little high for the same model. 

Checked online price for the same model from firstcry.com and snapdeal.com. The online price is little high (Rs. 2660) as compared to that of the price (Rs. 2390) quoted by Bhagavathi Toys. 

Leather cover for Nexus4

Got a leather flip cover for Nexus4. The brand is Nillkin. I bought it from www.dx.com for $13.

I placed the order by 06th June and received the product by 08th July.

The package had a leather flip cover, a dust sticker, front and back scratch-guard.

The flip cover is cool, though the accessibility of power button and the volume button have become little hard. And it didn't spoil the phone's beauty.

E-Stamp papers for agreement - Jeevan Bhima Nagar, Bangalore

Recently I had to make the rental agreement. I went to Indira Nagar BDA complex.

By the time I parked the vehicle, I was approached by a guy. He asked me whether I was looking for making agreement. When I said yes, he called for another guy and directed him to me.

I asked for the E-Stamp paper for which he said that won't be available here. But he can arrange for it. He said he would charge Rs.500 as he had to personally go and get it.

I decided to do that myself. So I started to enquire about the place from where I could get the E-Stamp paper. I started my searching with Canara bank, went to SBI, then post office and finally reached the place where I could get the E-Stamp paper. It is the Co-operative society which is opposite to Jeevan Bhima Nagar water tank.

It took only 15 mins to get the E-stamp paper. I had to fill one application mentioning the details of the first party and second party. Then I paid Rs.110 (Rs.100 Stamp paper + Rs 10 service charge).

The Co-operative society is open on Saturdays also. The timing is 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 

Dinner at Karavalli

Two days back had dinner at Karavalli, Gateway Hotel, Residency Road, Bangalore.

The seafoods were delicious. Had tiger prawn roast, meen eleittad and Kane bezule.

In main course had appam, neer dosa, malabar paratha, kori gassi (chicken dish) and mutton eshtew. All were good except the malabar paratha.

The rates are very high.

Mani's Dum Briyani

Yesterday we had dinner at Mani's Dum Briyani located in Jeevan Bhima Nagar Main Road.

We had two starters, briyani, garlic naans and a curry. Food was tasty, the ambiance was decent and the service was good.

And price ...

Happy birthday

Yes, today it's really a happy birthday. I step into the 31st year of my life.

Celebrated the birthday with colleagues at Samsung.

The Alchemist

I happened to read the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Some excerpts that I could refer often:

1. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own. 
2. World's greatest lie: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie.

Pongal 2013

We were in our hometown for the pongal celebration. This Pongal is special for us as it was preceded by my daughter's first birthday and followed by my dad's birthday.

Deepika's First Birthday

13-Jan-2013, the same day, a year before, I was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Deepika is her name. Now she is a year old. And we celebrated her birthday this day.

Morning we went to Murugan temple (Valliyur) and we had a pooja for her.

We have arranged for lunch at "New Life Home For Aged Destitutes". It's more than a year since we visited the home (previous visit). We have also invited few of our friends and our neighbours over there for the lunch.

We all went there for the celebrations. We had a small prayer followed by which we cut the birthday cake.

Deepika got blessings from the elderly people over there. And we all had the lunch.

Receiving the blessings from the elderly people over there, Deepika is hoping for a bright future.

கோழி கூவும் நேரம்

நீர்ப்பறவை, அழகன் - இரண்டும் வெவ்வேறு காலக்கட்டங்களில் வெளிவந்த தமிழ் திரைப்படங்கள். நீர்ப்பறவை 2012-லும், அழகன் 1991-லும் வெளிவந்தன.

நீர்ப்பறவையை பார்த்த பின்னர் எனக்கு அழகன் படத்திலுள்ள 'கோழி கூவும் நேரம்' பாடல்தான் நினைவுக்கு வந்தது. இப்பாடலில் கூறப்பட்ட கதையைத்தான் நீர்ப்பறவையின் கருவாக்கி பறக்க விட்டுருக்கிறார்கள் என எனக்குத் தோன்றியது.

2013-ஆம் ஆண்டின் முதல் நாள்

2013-ஆம் ஆண்டின் முதல் மணித்துளிகளை விழித்திருந்து வரவேற்றேன். வீட்டில் அனைவரும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வாழ்த்து தெரிவித்து கொண்டோம். அதன் பின் மின்னஞ்சல் மூலமாக நண்பர்கள், தெரிந்தவர்கள் என அனைவருக்கும் வாழ்த்து தெரிவித்து விட்டு தூங்க சென்றேன்.

வருடத்தின் முதல் நாள் நேரம் கழித்துதான் படுக்கையில் இருந்து எழுந்தேன். வழக்கம் போல் காலைக்கடன், குளியல், காலைச்சாப்பாடு, மடிகணினி முன் உட்கார்தல், மதியம் சாப்பாடு, மீண்டும் மடிகணினி முன் உட்கார்தல் என நேரம் போனது.

சாயங்காலம் அனைவரும் எங்காவது நேரம் செலவழித்து விட்டு, பின்னர் நல்ல உணவகத்தில் இரவு சாப்பாடை முடித்துவிட்டு வரலாம் என குடும்பத்தில் அனைவரும் கிளம்பினோம்.

போகும் வழியில் ஜெமினி சர்கஸ் போகலாம் என முடிவு செய்து சென்னை சென்ட்ரலை நோக்கி சென்றோம். ஜெமினி சர்கஸ் நுழை வாயிலை அடைந்தோம். அதன் பின்னர் சுமார் முக்கால் மணி நேரத்திற்கும் மேலாக வாகன நெரிசலில் நேரத்தை செலவழித்தோம்.

வாகன நெரிசலில் இருந்து மீண்டு செல்வதற்குள் அனைத்து டிக்கெட்களும் விற்று தீர்ந்துவிட்டன. அங்கும் இங்குமாய் சிலர் டிக்கெட்களை black-இல் விற்று கொண்டிருந்தனர். அவற்றை வாங்க விருப்பம் இல்லாமல் அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பினோம்.

மெரீனா பீச் பக்கம் போனோம். அங்கு பீச் ரோட்டில் வாகன நெரிசல் மிக அதிகமாக இருந்தது. எப்படியும் காரை நிப்பாட்டி பீச் போகமுடியாது என்று தெரிந்த பின்னர் இரவு சாப்பாடை முடித்து விட்டு வீட்டுக்கு போகலாம் என அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பினோம். பீச் ரோட்டில் இருந்து மவுண்ட் ரோட்டை பிடிப்பதற்குள் ஏகப்பட்ட சந்துகளில் மாட்டினோம்.

ஒரு வழியாய் வேளச்சேரியில் உள்ள ரத்னா கபே உணவகத்திற்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தோம். அங்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் கூட்டம். உணவகத்தினர் கூட்டத்தை சமாளிக்க முடியாமல் திண்டாடிவிட்டனர். உணவை ஆர்டர் செய்து விட்டு வெகு நேரம் உட்கார்ந்து, பிறகு சப்ளை செய்த வரை சாப்பிட்டுவிட்டு பாதியில் கிளம்பினோம்.

அதன் பின்னர் என்னை வேளச்சேரியில் உள்ள மின்சார ரயில் நிலையத்தில் இறக்கிவிட்டுட்டு மற்றவர்கள் வீட்டை நோக்கி சென்றனர். நான் பெங்களூர் மெயில் வண்டியை பிடிக்க வேளச்சேரிலிருந்து சென்னை சென்ட்ரலுக்கு சென்றேன்.

P.S. ஆண்டின் முதல் நாள் மட்டும் வெளியே போகனும்னு கிளம்பவே கூடாது. :-(
